Habit Stacking: Automate Your Success
The hardest part of any new habit is starting. "Habit Stacking" is a psychological trick that removes the need for willpower by anchoring a new behavior to an old one.
The Formula
The formula is simple: "After I [Current Habit], I will [New Habit]."
- After I pour my coffee, I will meditate for 1 minute.
- After I take off my work shoes, I will immediately put on my gym shoes.
- After I sit down at my desk, I will write down my top 3 goals.
Why It Works
Your current habits (like brushing your teeth) are already hard-wired into your brain. By stacking a new habit on top, you piggyback off that existing neural network.
The 2-Minute Rule: When starting a new habit, it should take less than 2 minutes to do. Optimize for showing up, not for perfection.
