Music for Focus: What to Listen To
Silence is golden, but sometimes the world is too loud. Using the right background noise can boost your focus by occupying the part of your brain that gets easily distracted.
No Lyrics Allowed
The number one rule of focus music: No Lyrics. Your brain is hard-wired to process language. If you hear words, your brain tries to understand them, which steals processing power from your work.
The Best Genres
- Video Game Soundtracks: This music is specifically designed to keep you engaged without distracting you. (Try the Skyrim or SimCity soundtracks).
- Binaural Beats (40Hz): Sound waves that mimic Gamma brain waves, associated with high-level focus.
- Lo-Fi Hip Hop: The repetitive, predictable beats are perfect for "flow states."
White Noise: If music is too much, try "Brown Noise" (deeper than white noise). It sounds like heavy rain or a waterfall and is excellent for blocking out office chatter.
