The Zeigarnik Effect: Why You Can't Relax
Have you ever noticed that a waiter can remember a complex order perfectly until the food is served, and then instantly forget it? This is the Zeigarnik Effect.
The principle states that people remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed ones. Unfinished tasks create "mental tension" that keeps the information active in your brain.
Hacking it for Productivity
You can use this tension to beat procrastination. The hardest part of any project is starting.
Simply commit to working for five minutes. Once you start, the Zeigarnik Effect kicks in: your brain will feel uncomfortable not finishing the task, making it easier to keep going.
The Hemingway Trick: Ernest Hemingway used to stop writing mid-sentence at the end of the day. This left an "open loop" in his mind, making it incredibly easy to start writing again the next morning.
